Spring/Summer ’18’s Ode to Disco with Trishna

The 70’s was widely synonymous with glitz and glam and frivolousness and is also the birthplace of the “smiley face” and you guessed it — the boogie. I wasn’t born then, obviously, but as a fashion student I know that what goes around comes around. Fashion is, after all, an indicator of the different eras in time and even so a reflection of the economy, social and political affairs.

Let’s talk about the 70’s today and more specifically, a time where men and women alike flocked to nightclubs, danced the night away to Chaka Khan all while donning brightly-coloured bodysuits, slinky metallic halter tops and bell bottoms. Originating from New York, this type of flamboyant dressing used to be almost exclusively reserved for nights out at the local discotheque (remember when clubs were called that?!) but Its resurrection in this year’s S/S catwalks has since seen itself morphed into ready-to-wear catalogues, making it socially acceptable to be worn again. Yep, you don’t have to wait till the sun goes down.

From hotpants at Carven to glitter and sequins at Ashish, expect next year to be the season of all things disco. The once-passe bodysuits, platforms and sequins are stayin’ alive and ready to boogie through spring/summer wish lists all over.
