I was there in Glasgow for 4 whole weeks on my school exchange and I could honestly say Glasgow is a very welcoming and homely place to visit. It was quite an experience being there where the arts and culture of Glasgow can be seen all around the place. One thing really great about Glasgow is how accessible the place is and you how can really explore the place by walking from one place to another because everything is just so near each other!
Blythswood House (Accommodation)
During my time in Glasgow, I was staying at Blythswood House which you could rent a room through trip advisor. The room was really clean, cosy and spacious enough for 2 people. I would often just sit on the window ledge and look out into the cityscape, it just feels like your own little room and it’s really nice to feel like home when you are overseas. There’s a kitchen outside the rooms and it’s really great to have a kitchen when you are in Europe because the price for food is fairly higher compared to our local food and you would really want to be able to whip up simple dishes as and when you can to save up or when you miss local food in Europe.
The accommodation is really convenient, it’s just a few minutes walk to food outlets and the supermarket and a slightly longer walk of around 10 minutes would get you to the Buchannan shopping street.
Food
There are tons of food eateries around Glasgow but here are some of the more notable ones that I have visited a couple of times during my stay there.
Bistro
Bistro is a halal kebab store that serves affordable pizzas, burgers and finger food from as low as 99 pence per item. It is my quick fix for cheap food when I was studying there!
Address: 404 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow G2 3JD, UK
JD Wetherspoon
JD Wetherspoon is definitely not as cheap as Bistro but their breakfast deals that run all the way till noon is really something worth checking out. They have different kinds of breakfast sets like their traditional breakfast which is really hearty and filling.
Address: 2 St Vincent Pl, Glasgow G1 2DH, UK
Bloc+
Bloc+ is a themed bar that serves different daily specials at a promotion rate. It is a nice place to hang out or have a nice dinner. Live bands perform on specific days of the week and it is a really interesting place to check out in Glasglow!
Address: 117 Bath St, Glasgow G2 2SZ, UK
Bibimbap
If you are craving for some Korean-Asian food in Glasgow, you should definitely check out this place. They serve Authentic Korean Cuisine with a pretty big portion (especially their kimchi fried rice), you could order to share!
Address: 3 W Nile St, Glasgow G1 2PR, UK
Places To Go
GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art)
GOMA is one of the few iconic museums in Glasgow. One of the most interesting facts about GOMA is that the monument of the museum was made iconic when a parking cone was placed on the head of the statue over-night and it became a representation of the freedom of art exhibits artworks from designers and entry is free for all!
Geroge Square
This is located opposite the GOMA museum. It is an open space with quite a few monuments around the square. You would be able to spot a number of people sitting around talking and chilling at the open area.
Glasglow Cathedral
The cathedral has a really serene ambience and I really love the architecture of it. Inside the cathedral, you will be able to see the intriguing details of the building, the beautiful stained glass designs and experience the grandness of the place. Entry of the cathedral is free for all, which is something I really liked about this particular cathedral because, in most parts of Europe, cathedrals would usually require a ticket or some sort of entry charge to go to certain parts of the space.
Buchanan Street (Shopping Street)
Buchanan Street is the city’s main pedestrian boulevard. I don’t have to say much about this street as it is honestly the street that links to a huge part of the shopping district that you have to visit when you’re in Glasglow. You would be able to see familiar brands such as Topman, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and more on this street.
*You would probably take more than half a day or so if you’re shopping around this area.
Kelvingrove Museum and Park
This museum houses a number of great artist paintings like Monet and other interesting exhibitions that changes every now and then. The entry is free for all as well. If you are a park lover you could head down to Kelvingrove Park to relax, take a stroll and meet tons of dogs over there!
Driftwood Park
Here come the fun and PARTY! Drinking on weekdays at driftwood with a student card could only cost you 99pence for a cup of liquor with mixer. They have extremely interesting cocktails set theme like Harry Potter, Star Wars etc. The Harry Potter Butterbeer is a must try!
The Garage Club/Nice and Sleazy
The Garage club was really fun for me during the Fridays and Saturdays where it houses 3 clubs of different genres (EDM, R&B and Oldies) and I love the oldies/classic part of the club the most. You get a student discount for entry.
Nice and Sleazy is a great drop by club especially if you are a student, entry is free!
Day Trip (Travel by the railway train)
Sterling Castle and Loch Lomond
If you are into the histories of medieval castles, knights and the culture of that time you would probably enjoy this attraction. It’s quite an experience walking through the huge dining halls and exploring parts of the castle.
For Loch Lomond, it’s a boat ride around the Loch Lomond river, the view there is fantastic and really eye-opening. You get to see tons of mountains and the vastness of the river and realise how big the world really is. It won’t be a disappointment if you are into scenic trips.
Edinburg
If you don’t already know, Edinburg was the place J.K Rowling took most of her inspiration from when she was writing Harry Potter so you can expect a lot of Harry Potter themed stores over there and lots of different kind of interesting tours can be found there so be sure to research and try out the tours! There are a few climbing spots where people get to climb all the way up and look down on the cityscape.
Troon Beach
Troon beach is a very interesting beach because for the first time ever, I was feeling really cold down there. When you talk about beach you would probably picture a crowded, sunny and hot one instead but Troon Beach is pretty much the opposite. It’s a place where you feel like all your worries in the world just vanish. I enjoy Troon beach a lot and if you are a beach lover you should really drop by and experience it.
TRNSMT Festival
Last but not least, I was fortunate enough to be in Glasgow for the TRNSMT which happened on the 29th June. The set for that day was Jessie J, Kodaline, James Bay, The Script. My friends and I were really close to the stage and the vibes there was just amazing and I must say this was the best festival/concert I have been to. I got the tickets for this festival for only about $130 SGD for the first day and it was worth every penny. You really must head down for the TRNSMT Festival if you happen to be in Glasgow during that period!
