Monochrome Outfits: Tonal Layering

From runways to street style stars, it’s obvious that the monochrome look has been making its mark the past few seasons. But instead of wearing the exact same colour head to toe, we see a shift towards layering different shades of the same hue to create a tonal outfit that’s both insta-worthy and office ready.

We’ve rounded up some top picks and simple tricks to expertly nail one of this season’s most noteworthy trends.

Yellow Monochrome Outfit

With the arrival of Gen-Z yellow, the hue has become something of a mainstay this season. For a fun daytime outfit, we paired a white T-shirt that features bits of pastel yellow, with a pair of canary yellow shorts. We tied it all together with a pair of sneakers that feature both white and yellow to keep things cohesive and clean.

Red Monochrome Outfit

Red has been one of the hot favourites when it comes to styling a monochromatic look, and it’s easy to see why. But in order to avoid looking too reminiscent of the Chinese New Year outfit you wore to your grandparents’ house, pair scarlet reds with soft blush-toned pinks. Here, we layered a red denim jacket over a pink wrap dress, and finished it with a simple red crossbody with slightly orange undertones.

Grey Monochrome Outfit

The thought of an all-grey outfit can be a bit drab, but it’s an office-friendly hue that is the perfect backdrop for pops of colour. We paired a darker toned top with a checkered grey mini that features streaks of yellow to add some warmth to the cool hue. Top it off with a simple grey cut-out boot for a modern, edgy and office-appropriate outfit.

Khaki Monochrome Outfit

Khaki is another neutral tone that many wouldn’t bat an eyelash at, but this season, neutrals are anything but dull—think Burberry’s iconic khaki trenches. We paired a khaki wrap skirt with a bronze-toned yarn top for a little tonal and textural contrast, while tying it all together with a leopard print heel that features the khaki shade as an undertone.

Green Monochrome Outfit

Another way to put together a monochromatic outfit that isn’t all about one hue is to go on the complementary colour route. Here we pair pinks and greens, which are on opposite sides of the colour wheel. We chose a dress that’s equal parts pink and green, and punctuate the subtle green hues with a bright emerald-toned bum bag. We finish it off with a similarly toned pair of slides for the perfect springtime outfit.
