Our curated list of fashion films we love, just for you.

From documentaries of a designer’s first collection to a film to mock the fashion industry, it is no doubt that fashion seems to be the muse of every Hollywood director these days, and while there have been many sub-par films about fashion, there are a handful of films we love. Whether or not you’re a move junkie, if you love fashion and everything that comes with it, these are some films you have to add to your list.

 1. The First Monday in May

This film gives us a first-hand experience at the immense pressure of coordinating and planning one of the biggest event in the fashion industry, the Met Gala. The film brings the audience behind the scenes of 2014’s preparations of the China themed Met Gala, beyond the glitz and glamour of the event. This film would make you feel like you were part of the Met Gala, from beginning till the end.

2. The September Issue

Every year, it seems like fashion devotees all around would rush to get their hands on a copy of Vogue’s autumn issue. Director RJ Cutler gives us the once in a lifetime chance to go behind the scenes of the September issue, the most hyped issue of the fashion bible of today, Vogue. The film features the legendary Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief and how she manages to coordinate massive preparations for this issue.

3. Iris

One of the most interesting documentaries yet, we question what would the fashion industry be like without Iris Apfel? She is a fascinating character that you can never be sick of, a whole film about her is a dream come true for most fashionistas. The film features Iris and her shopping habits, clothes and jewellery collection and the quirks of life, this is your only chance to understand this legendary 95 year old fashion icon.

4. Dior and I

Dior and I give viewers more than just a peek of what goes on during preparations for a fashion show, it is a whole experience. Dior and I features then-designer, Raf Simons and gifted artisans pull together in just 8 weeks for his first couture collection for the fashion power house, Christian Dior. If you think an entire season worth of clothing cannot be designed, sewed and displayed in 8 weeks, think again.

5. Fresh Dressed

Enough of couture for now, let’s talk hip hop fashion. Fresh dressed is documentary chronicling the rise of hip hop fashion, from the streets of the Bronx to catwalks of international fashion shows. It displays the influence of hip hop on fashion, from past to present. Enough of the glitz and glamor of high fashion, here’s a fascinating perspective on fashion.
