1. Tell us a bit of what you do in 27A.
I am a Hair Specialist for 27A. Aside from being a hair stylist, I provide my in-depth knowledge and insight to the other artist in our company through workshops. I’m also a make-up artist.
I’m relying on clothes to make me look good then it means the clothes are wearing me instead of the other way around.Christian
2. Why did you decide to become a hairstylist?
It was something that I had tried out by chance and ended up being really good at it. It was from there that I discovered my passion. It really spoke to me creatively and the skill was second nature me.
3. How did you get started in the industry and how was the journey like?
I started out the first 4 years of my career at a salon. It helped me polish my skills in the workforce setting. I didn’t like the idea of a fixed income and an 11 to 8 routine. I also didn’t like that I couldn’t express my creativity through styling as clients mostly came in to get their hair cut and coloured. Generally clients were not as adventurous. Eventually I entered into the business of freelance and it was definitely rough at first. Luckily I had friends in the industry who gave me opportunities to show off what I could do and put myself on the radar. Eventually Marie found me and we had good work chemistry and so we started working together.
4. What is your creative process like when styling a new client?
There’s a lot to take into consideration. First and foremost, what kind of hair type they have will allow me to foresee how their hair will respond to certain heat techniques. What kind of person they are and just how expressive they would like to be. I have to ensure what I give my client is something they are able to maintain and that it projects the type of image they desire. I also have to take into consideration about external forces such as the weather and just how humid it’s going to be that day. All this happens through consultation and breaking the ice.
5. Which iconic hairstyles do you love?
Veronica Lake and her ‘peek-a-boo’ style. Legend has it that a stray lock of her hair fell over her eye and the 40’s screen siren look was born.
6. Outside of hair styling, what other fields would you like to dabble at?
I have actually acquired many varied skills such as hair removal and spray tanning. I suppose it would be interesting to be able to provide every service that a man needs or can indulge in. It’s something I can see myself dabble in, especially since I’d like to see such services in the market for myself.
7. Would you rather go out without styling your hair or not styling your outfit?
Is that a trick question? I think clothes are a secondary layer of expression and underneath it all it’s your skin and in this case your hair. I would prioritise my hair because if I’m relying on clothes to make me look good then it means the clothes are wearing me instead of the other way around.
