1. You usually do street style photography, so how was the experience like doing a studio shoot for such a big group of personalities?
It was a fresh experience and definitely a huge challenge for me. It’s my second nature to visualise my models in the backgrounds and lighting that the street provides. Therefore, shooting in the studio made me feel like I needed to use a different part of my mind.
2. Was it nerve wrecking to be taking the first shot for the day?
Well it definitely was because I really wanted to do the best I could. Also, the pressure is always on when there is such a big team.
3. How was Joel as your mentor?
Joel was a really, really kind mentor. He was more than patient, and very willing to teach me where I was lacking. I’m so thankful to have had him as my mentor during this campaign.
4. What is the main thing you took back from this campaign/mentorship with Joel?
I think what really stayed with me till today was the little chat that we had, when we both came to agree that the main element that makes a picture great is the “feelings” that it gives, and the way it helps people to emote. Much more than the technical aspects, which have to be perfect as well (especially in a studio setting), it is really all about the feelings. Sometimes as a creative, I struggle to let my intuition take lead as I am afraid that I’d have no logical control over the outcome. But I think that with experience & practice, photographers like me should learn to give in more to the feeling-part of us, as it matures creatively and becomes sharper over time. That is something that I am still learning, and trying to perfect!
5. What are your plans for the future?
Recently, I had decided to go back to school to rediscover myself as a photographer. As much as I want to be out achieving and accomplishing things for my career, I feel like it’s too early to settle on what I want to do exactly for the rest of my life. I would love to explore new horizons, especially in other aspects related to the creative scene. Of course, I’d still love to be traveling lots, as it keeps me inspired and widens my perspective – creatively or just, on life. I really love meeting new people from different cultures.
Ideally, in three years’ time it would be great if I could see myself set up my own business.
6. Pick one: Skirt or jeans?
Usually, it’d definitely be jeans. But lately, I feel like skirts have been on the trend and I’ve been finding myself adding more skirt pieces to my closet! So I’m undecided, really.
