10 Easy Money-Saving Tips To Maximize Your Holiday in Bali

This article was written in collaboration with www.klook.com.

When we need a weekend holiday, we want it quick, fast and cheap. Bali might already be one of the most cost-efficient holidays for most of us, but what if we told you it can be even cheaper?

We’ve pooled together a list of tips, tricks and hacks to maximizing your dollars on a weekend getaway to Bali. Ready to start saving? Here’s how!

1. Pre-book Your Airport Transfers

After every flight, the first thing you want to do is to head to your hotel, drop off your bags and start exploring! Most people opt for local taxi/Uber (not well-received amongst the local community) or expensive villa transfer services that can cost upwards of SGD30 per trip.

Pre-booking your airport transfer doesn’t just give you a peace of mind, it can also be more cost effective! Klook offers reliable Bali airport transfers at very reasonable prices. A trip to Kuta can cost just SGD10 (inclusive of road tolls) for 2-4 pax (depending on how many luggage you have) and if you’re headed to Seminyak it’s SGD15!

You’ll also want to pick up your Bali SIM Card with Klook to have it installed on the spot rather than joining the snaking queues at the telco counters. At SGD9.45 for 6GB worth of data, we say it’s totally worth it!

2. Pack Light

The beauty of beach holidays lies in the fact that you can dress as light as possible. To save on additional inflight baggage costs and unnecessary hassle, pack a few beach staples and you’re all set for your next holiday.

With days spent mostly in your swimwear, all you need are some essentials like denim shorts, a breezy top and a nice dress to last you the weekend. We’ve pooled together a capsule collection from Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse and Topshop to have you turning heads in Bali!

3. Opt For A Car Charter For A Hassle-Free Way of Getting Around

For those who’ve been to Bali, we’re sure you can identify with the issue of finding transport home from locations that are more remote, like Pandawa Beach.

Booking a car charter gives you the flexibility to travel wherever you want whenever you want and still return to your villa at the end of the day! Klook offers car charters at just SGD42 for groups of 2-5. This gives you 10 hours of service with your own local driver who may just share some tips of his own!

4. Visit Alternative Versions Of Popular Bali Photo Spots

Iconic attractions like the Bali Swing and the Bali Nest have made their rounds on Instagram, but did you know you might have to wait a whopping 3 hours just to get on the swing? On top of that, you’re limited to a few swings for approximately SGD20.

There are in fact many similar structures located all over Bali. At the Tegalalang Rice Fields, you can find replicas of both the swing and the nest in one place. The best part is you’ll just need to fork out SGD5 for as long as you want on the swing with zero queues!

5. Eat Good Food For Cheap

Looking at the tablecloth and the posh interior you’d think that you set foot in a fine dining restaurant. Wrong! Ultimo is just one of many F&B joints with good food that’s easy on the wallet!

This Italian restaurant serves hearty pizzas and pasta for under SGD10 per dish. For those who enjoy a glass of wine with their food, you’ll be delighted to know house pours start from a mere SGD2.50 per glass.

Make sure you also head to local favourites like Hog Wild by Chef Bruno with suggestive menu items like Porn Corn and their famous pork ribs go for just SGD 9. Some locals even prefer this over Naughty Nuri’s!

6. You Don’t Have To Dine-In for A Photo

The food at these famous Bali hotspots taste amazing, but if you’re just there for a photo you don’t always need to dine in!

The Instaworthy wall at Sea Circus for example, is located outside the restaurant. Simply grab your shot and move on to the next location.

7. When It Comes To Shopping, The More The Merrier

Everyone raves about these iconic rattan baskets from Bali, but they don’t come cheap if you don’t know how to haggle. Based on experience, it’s best to buy multiple pieces at one go to snag the best offers. For reference, we got six bags at SGD 15 each from the Ubud Traditional Art Market.

8. Always Settle On The Price Beforehand

Not everything in Bali comes with a fixed price, especially where taxis and food like seafood are concerned. To avoid any unwanted surprises, it’s always a good idea to mutually agree on a price beforehand before you proceed.

The prices of seafood vary depending on supply and seasonality, so finding a benchmark price point is difficult. We like Jimbaran Bay for seafood as most restaurants have price lists detailing the prices of the different types of seafood available. You will also get to personally pick the size of fish, crab, prawn or squid of your choice so you know just how much you’ll be paying before your dinner.

Pro-Tip: Head there before sunset for the best dinner views.

9. Stay Near The City Centre

The idea of lush forested villas might be tempting, but staying within walking distance of amenities and the city centre means you’ll get to save money on the taxi rides you’d otherwise be taking.

Besides, there are numerous (affordable) accommodation options in the heart of the town centre that offer the same semblance of seclusion and privacy!

10. Change Extra Money Before Your Trip

Don’t run the risk of running out of cash before your holiday is up and change more than you need before you leave. Exchange rates are typically not as good as those you can find from places like Arcade or Chinatown and you often have to make a detour to look for one with good rates.

You don’t want to spend your time looking for money changers with favourable rates when you can be relaxing on a beach, fresh coconut in hand!
